And now we were headed to the biker party, the thought of it made me anxious, I had never attended a function of this sort. But I was with O, so I knew I would be safe.
The Leathernecks crew finally found the party at the biker bar. It was not yet nightfall, yet dozens of bikers already littered the sidewalk, their collective nature a menacing calm, their smiles left behind in 6th grade class pictures. A man that appeared to be 6 yelled to us, To The Right!! I didnt know why we were told to park on the other side of where all the other Harleys were meticulously parked, but biker chicks dont ask, and I never found out. My cover charge was either waved, or picked up, my hand inked with an X, and I was on the inside. There was no missing the fact that I was the only chick in the place. I made a joke to my new biker buddies about it, hey, the good news is, no line for the ladies room! Ignoring me, they signaled the bartender for shots of Jack all around. Biker chicks are for made for one thing only: to f*ck bad assed bikers, and I was OK with that.
Still, I was a little confused as to how to conduct myself at the party, how to interact. O carefully explained to me that you dont chat it up with other bikers if youre a bikers old lady. I was well into my first official biker party, and it was a great night. But I needed some proof that I had been here, some sort of party take-away. Getting on and off exits, following our noses for ocean air. Finally, O pulled off the highway to some horse trails where he had trained soldiers to ride, it ran right along the ocean. We dismounted the bike, and walked hands clasped along a service road, he leading me alongside the wooded brush, until we finally came upon an opening. We ventured in, branches snapping under our black boots. Once we were deep into the roadside wilderness, O instructed me to grab hold of the tree in front of me, standing behind me, I took my final lesson.
Now drunk on Jack and defilement, O safely charioted me home after our roadside respite. Soon we were roaring under a massive steel overpass, Manhattan a vivid scroll to our right. Hmmmm.... That's me. I'm a woman and I am definitely not a biker. Let me take a closer look. Okay, the ad is pretty short, but he said something about being somewhat of a local celebrity a couple years back? If I email him he'll give me his name to Google?

So I Google his name and come up with this new story. Before I summarize the story, I'll let you know that John Wayne (from now on to be referred to as JW) has been in the Navy for nearly 20 years and he has a very muscular build. This man was already an American Hero.
"During the afternoon in a residential area of Calif., JW and his roommate* responded to the request of their neighbor asking for help.
The woman informed the Sailors her fiancé was unstable and would not allow her two sons, one 17-months old and the other 5-years old, to leave her apartment.
Upon hearing children were involved, JW took a canister of oleoresin capsicum (OC), commonly known as pepper spray, and he and his roommate went to investigate the situation.
I was shocked, said JW. I didnt really understand what I was seeing.
When they arrived at the apartment, they discovered the fiancé holding the younger of the two children and watched him grab a large knife from the kitchen area.
I couldnt believe this was happening; I just didnt believe it, said his roommate. This is stuff you see on TV or read in the newspaper.
JW tried to convince the assailant to let the child go, but the man stabbed himself in the neck and started bleeding profusely. The woman became hysterical and begged him to release her child. For a brief moment, the man was distracted, and JW grabbed the 17-month old child from the assailant.
The woman took the 17-month old child and fled to a bedroom. JW helped the woman and child escape through the bedroom window; however, the 5-year old was still in the apartment with the assailant.
Roommate and JW returned to the apartment in attempt to convince the man to let the child go. While at the front door, a carpenter* who was working in the vicinity, joined the two Sailors to assist with the struggle.
The assailant finally opened the door, now holding the 5-year old boy in one hand and a 10-inch knife in the other.
The Sailors and the carpenter stood by as the assailant began stabbing himself again, this time in the chest while refusing to release the child.
The carpenter pulled his hammer from his utility belt and told the man to release the child.
The assailant threatened to kill the child and raised the knife to his throat.
At this moment JW yelled, OC, OC, and within a second, JW blasted the canister of pepper spray into the assailants face, and roommate grabbed the child.
Carpenter and JW distracted the assailants attention long enough for roommate to flee the area with the children and mother and took them to his apartment.
When I came back to the apartment after taking them to my place, I couldnt find JW, said roommate. s the only time I got scared, was when I thought something had happened to my shipmate.
Meanwhile, after regaining his bearings, the assailant wielded his knife again and went after Carpenter. As a result, carpenter was stabbed three times in the attack.
Carpenter is a really good guy, said JW. He had nothing to do with what was going on, and he still didnt hesitate to help us. The knife that he got stabbed with was meant for me.
JW then worked simultaneously to end the assailants attack on carpenter while clearing away a crowd of onlookers to prevent the man from stabbing anyone else.
m over here, Im over here, said JW.
By yelling and screaming at the assailant, JW ended the attack on carpenter but now, the attention was on JW. He only hoped he could outrun the assailant.
Fortunately, a deputy sheriff arrived on the scene just as JW started to tire from running and the assailant was about to make contact.
The deputy sheriff drew his weapon and ordered the man to the ground, ending the ordeal.
If not for the heroic actions of these three men, two little boys could very likely be dead, said Sheriff Bill Kolender of the San Diego County Sheriffs Department.
JW and roommate are currently stationed in San Diego, Freedoms future homeport.
