Generally, the form of auxiliaries, boards and departments in individual black churches are determined by the age, denomination, size, location and specific needs of the church body. However, there is one auxiliary that most modern black churches have, regardless of their age, denomination, size or location: an usher board or usher guild. The work of the usher board is considered a ministry of the church. The pulpit, music and usher departments of the black church are often the three most visible ministries of the church. Each has an important servant role in the churchs overall ministry. Yet, each plays a different, but essential, role.
On Ushers Day, usher boards from many different churches, including usher guilds from different denominations, are invited to participate in the annual day activities of the host church. On that day, the ushers of the host church do not work. For them, it is a day of rest, except for the grand usher march, which usually comes at the end of the program. Each of the invited churches comes with a major donation which is presented during the usher board roll call and march. These gifts of love, depending upon the number of sister churches invited, can, and do often, amount to thousands of dollars. Usually, all of the money, except for expenses, goes into the coffers of the host church. This is repeated year after year. Ushers refer to it as helping the usher board of a sister church. One of the highlights of Ushers Day is the Grand March. All ushers, including the host ushers, participate in the grand march of the ushers. Those churches with children and youth usher boards add a youthful energy to the procession.

Will Smith’s production company has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring to life the story of one of the many heroes of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, the two companies announced Wednesday.
Overbrook Entertainment and Sony have earned the film rights to the story of former Marine John Keller, who rescued nearly 244 of his neighbors in New Orleans in the days that followed one of the largest natural disaster on American soil to date.
Keller, who was nicknamed “The Can Man” by the media, orchestrated the rescue of his elderly neighbors from their apartment building, the American Can Company in New Orleans’ Mid City neighborhood.
Following the levee breach that flooded the city and added to the damage already caused by Hurricane winds, American Can sat in over 11 feet of water.
Keller single-handedly kept his neighbors calm and controlled while helping them exit the building.

By Tu Tran
There are many dating website out there. Theres one for every taste. If you like dating from your own ethnicity or if you like the same sex, they are all there for your choosing. But the problem with dating sites is that there are too many of them. Most sites are very small which have only a very small amount of people to choose from. To choose an online Asian dating site, make sure there are more than 1000 members. This allows you a variety of choices. Paid sites are more reliable, they scare away fraudsters and fakes, because they require to part with some of their money. Usually with the free websites, you may notice someone that looks familiar in another website. Watch out for these people! A photo is essential to choosing your perfect Asian mate. Meeting Asians women online is much easier than picking them up in the street, bars and clubs. In general, Asian woman tend to be harder to pick up because most of them are from overseas and cannot speak English fluently. Write about where you work, your interests, hobbies and what you want out of women. Hopefully the girl of your dreams will choose you.

After Jamie had EVERYBODY in his vid for Blame it, Ron Howard is now speaking out about the experience. Like a fish out of water: Howard was enjoying the Democrats induction into office in January (09), when he was approached by the singer to star in the video for Blame It, alongside other actors Forrest Whittaker, Jake Gyllenhaal and Samuel L. Jackson. But Howard was wary of accepting the offer - because he was worried he wouldnt be able to play the role of a party animal.
He tells EW.com, We were at the inauguration and there was this tent full of showbiz people and their families. Jamie came over and said, Hey, Im shooting a video in Los Angeles, will you come by? I was picturing a sort of We Are The World thing. So I showed up, and Jamie said, s this party scene, and youre going to drive up with Jake Gyllenhaal and Forest Whitaker and me.

I give uncharacteristically serious advice to women and homosexual men on how to gobble the hobgoblin. Out of respect to the lovely and talented Kicesie, I kept this video surprisingly PG rated hope you learn something from it! Great Oral Sex for Men (Kicesie) www.youtube.comSince I am a lazy no good sock, I came up with another concept to make videomaking easier for me. The last time I did this, with Dear Angry it was more successful than I could have ever hoped.

Are you living the F.A.B.S. Life?
A generation of F.A.B.S.... they are the fearless, single women with a "DO ME" mantra that rivals any power couple. They're smart, successful, and are making it happen with ambitious abandon, living their American dream. They may not have chosen to be F.A.B.S. in the City, but they're making it work -- for now. Most are ready for a relationship and some are actively dating, but Mr. Right has not shown up, so it's Mr. Right Now tonight. (Yawn)
This Sunday, we invite you to participate in a raw dialogue about the raging epidemic that is reportedly sweeping our community. It's on the tip of every glam girl's tongue and happens to be the volatile topic that dominates the heated convo over Friday night martinis and Saturday evening Merlot.
We've all heard the stats: New York area single women outnumber single men by more than 210,000. And it's no secret that Manhattan is well known to have a 10 to 1 ratio of single women to men. The stats become more disparaging when we take stock of our own communities, at our own family members and at our very dearest besties - a Generation of F.A.B.S.: Fabulous And Black and Single. According to a 2005 census survey, 30% of black women are living with a spouse, as compared to 49% who are Hispanic, 55% White and 60% Asian.

Ive been doing some tidying up with my data on my computers. Its mostly my photos. My most recent photos are on my main laptop, but the 250GB HD is brimming full, so Im moving them to an external 500GB drive.
That gave me the opportunity to tidyup my external drive. There were loads of stuff that I hadnt erased. For example, there was loads of music that I still hadnt integrated with my main library on my main laptop. It took a while, because the indexing wasnt similar, but I managed to get through the whole list. That must have freed up about 100GB on the external drive.
This makes me think about the system that Ill use when I get back home. Ill probably set up a mini-HD tower with 2TB drives, something like a Drobo drive. The main computer desktop at home will need to be formatted. My wife has been telling me that there are a lot of viruses. That means that Ill format all of the drives and start over with a fresh install, something that I was planning on doing a while ago.
Once back in Taiwan, Ill probably swap the 250GB drive for a 500GB on my laptop, start with a Windows Vista 64 install and max my RAM to 8GB. These types of components are quite cheap there.
I wouldnt mind buying new HDs for my main computer as well. A couple of 2TB drives would do the job, probably three or four. Ive got a full Lanli brushed aluminum tower, so theres enough space.
I want to use some kind of redundancy for my data, especially my photos. I usually tend to burn my movies and shows onto DVDs, once Ive finished with them. The last thing that Id most probably like is to implant either a dual monitor system, or simply upgrade to a 30 widescreen monitor. Or, alternitavely, I could get a cheap plasma TV and hook it up. It wouldnt cost more than a few hundred bucks.
The reason why I havent uploaded any pics was simply because my HD was full. Now, its time to do this.

I remember when they started.
I was about seven and I could feel it. This was the brink, but I wasn't sure what it was. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat anything and every part of my head from the hairline all the way to the chin was starting to ache.
I went to bed early in a dark when I was scared of the dark, but only in no light I could feel a little better.
By the time I awoke the next day, I was in pain. So much so the light hurt the world swirled around me and I wanted to collapse to the ground and just cry.
I was having a migraine.
I remember getting up going down to find my mother and telling her my head hurt. I had no temperature. I wasn't hot. My head just hurt.
My parents were never one to keep me out of school so my mother gave me a children's tylenol and that was supposed to be it for me.
But it wasn't. The day was long and it was horrible. It didn't get any better and when I arrived home from school, my mother called and asked was I alright. (Mother's intuition)
I told her my head still hurt.
She took me to the doctor the next day, but by then the pain had receded, I could see a little better and everythin was almost back right with the world.
They found nothing wrong with me and said it could be a condition caused just as an after affect because i had an ulcer removed that I was born with.
Two months later, it returned.
My mother returned to the doc immediately then and they still found nothing wrong with me. Told my mother I was probably dehydrated and needed to lay off the candy. I didn't eat candy when I was a child. My father prohibited it.
I went home thinking maybe something was wrong with me.
I know I laid down under the covers after my mother made me drink a whole bunch of water and thanking the Lord it was a Saturday because I know my father would have made me go to school anyway.
I awoke the next day and the pain was gone.
Five months later, Whoops there it came!
Again I was trucked to the doctor and my mother expressed worry this time. The doctor thought I should get a scan. It could be a tumor or something worse.
I did, but they wouldn't give me anything for the pain. My mother told me to breath. I just wanted to remove my head and put it somewhere until it went away. It hurt so bad. My eyes felt like they were too big for the sockets and my teeth even had begun to hurt.
The scan showed nothing. No tumor, no trama, no nothing.
And so it went. More and more headaches came and by the time I was ten, It was on a cycle. Every three months the monster would creep on me and I thought I would die for a die. Sometimes I wish I did die for a day to escape the excruciating pain that vibrated between my ears.
"Breath deep breathes," I remembered my mother saying. "Just breath." She would rub my back and have me close my eyes. "Don't cry. Think of something good. Think of something happy, Sylvia."
I would recess my mind to a happy place. Think of a story, take comfort that no other place on my body hurt except my head. MY ENTIRE HEAD HURT.
And I would think after every doctor's appointment that something was really wrong with me and no one else in the world because they (the doctors) couldn't figure out what was wrong with me.
My mother left my dad and I remember a week after her leaving, I was scheduled to go to a headache specialist. Daddy was mad that I had to be taken out of school and he had to miss a day of work.
The headaches were so bad that sometimes it hurt to even be horizontal and vertical.
We had to drive a long way and the whole way he fussed and cussed. My sister and brother came with us. I think Daddy was a little scared because he never wanted any of us to miss school, but he was unsure that what to do.
We got there and they informed my father that he had to come back because there were beads in my head a week later. My father looked hard at me in deep seated anger but he was determined not to come back.
We went out to the car, he pulled out his tool kit and started popping the beads out of my head.
The agony of the pressure to my skull was even more excruciating.
My sister and brother were looking at me as if I were dying.
I thought I was.
A hundred beads. He cracked a hundred beads out of my head and then dragged me back in the doctor's office. The staff looked amazed. They thought my father had taken down my hair in thirty minutes and put it back right.
Even though I was in pain, I thought it was a little funny.
Unfortunately, this expensive machine that was supposed to find a needle in the haystack found nothing at all wrong with me. I threw up after the scan. The headache was still there and they gave me nothing for the pain.
My father looked a little worried as he saw the nurses cleaning up my mess and I collapsed to the floor cryng miserably.
The specialist said I was experiencing migraines. They couldn't find out the reason and back then there was no special medicine for it. I don't think if there was my father would have gotten it for me.
We went home and he didnt' bother me for the rest of the day. I didn't want to be bothered.
Three years later after years of a lot of pain, I woke up and this one was different. Not only did my head hurt, but my body ached and was hot.
I told my dad of the pain, but he assumed it was a regular one and told me to go to school.
My equilibruim was off and I wasn't naseous. I felt parched all day and even my friends noted I was hot to touch.
When I got home, my dad's girlfriend who was a nurse assistant saw I didn't look too good. She checked my temperature. It was 102.
She called my father home immediately and he was jumping mad.
"Why didn't you tell me your head hurt?"
I couldn't look at him stupidly which is what I wanted to do.
They took me to the doctor when my temperature didn't go down. Matter of fact, by the time they checked me in the hospital, I had gone up to 103 and was shaking. I was hot and cold.
But even though it felt bad all over, ( I know this sounds weird) I was glad it wasn't a migraine. Those were worse.
The doctor said I had scarlett fever.
The whole time I had scarlett fever the Monster Headaches didn't come. My woman's flow came on a week later I was cleared of the scarlette fever.
A month later, The Monster hit me like a mack truck and since then every month. After my second child, they increased. Coming every month.
Now in this day and age, they have migraine specialists and they put me on the diets and take away things I love. This alleviates the pressure, but it doesn't take away the pain.
They try to give me medicine, but other conditions and allergies doesn't allow me to take everything.
Since seven I have suffered through the pain and now as I turn fourty I worry about brain trama and more, but I still breathe through them just like my mother has told me to.
Today I have one. A really bad one and I sit here wishing I could lay down.
(the dark thing doesn't work any more.)
Sometimes outside weather helps. The colder the better.
But I live.
I think that's the point of this whole post is that I live another day and I know this too shall pass. It's just like heartache and labor and other things we suffer through.
We live.
We breath
We love
....another day.
thank you, God.

Well, if you read the the lengthy discussion of comments on the "For fun only" Wall of Sexy, you can read every one of my responses to this inquiry. It's not that I don't want to answer your question (because I'm going to do it anyway). But I've had this question asked multiple times and have answered it multiples in various threads on the blog and Flickr.
I realize you mean nothing by it. You're merely curious. But the wall is based on people who appear on television, in film, in sports, in magazines and on the runway. The main requirement that the photo must be a gorgeous, preferably studio shot. I don't know if you've noticed this, it is:
1) Hard to find high quality photos of black men on the web period. There's lots of porny ones. Or hideous ones of rappers but outside of Mos Def, Kanye West, Andre 3000 (and TI) I don't find ANY rappers attractive.
2) Even harder to find multiple pictures of darker male actors on the Web
3) Hollywood and the runway are still quite prejudiced, so a lot of the players are not exceedingly dark.
4) I'm not big into sports, so the number of athletes on the wall is limited.
The wall is merely reflection of that. I find a lot of people good looking. But I can guarantee you, with blacks as the minority in Hollywood and the top photographers lavishing much more time on Matt Damon, than say, Eammon Walker, I'm going to have a lot more pictures of Matt Damon. (Yet it's probably a tie between Noeime Lenoir, Jill Marie Jones, Zoe Saldana and Korean American Actor Daniel Henney who have the most photos of all.)
Also, there are a lot of people folks consider light, I don't consider light. (TJ Holmes is just brown to me. I really don't understand it when people call him light-skinned. Someone called NFL baller Ray Lewis light. Really? Harold Ford, Jr. on the other hand ...) Light to me is you're almost white looking. (I do have shrine to Wentworth Miller on a separate page!) I don't consider myself to be light even though I've been told I am, multiple times. So I end up being accused (constantly) of being some "light-skinned chick" quite negatively OR WORSE, accused of faking like I'm light skinned because the rules are soooo subjective! I mean, I'm brown. I think the wall is probably dominated by brown people and every kind of brunette. I mean, poor Scarlett Johanssen, Kristianna Lokken, Owen Wilson, Uma Thurman and Kristen Bell are basically holding it up for the blonds
(Unless you count that one pic of HK superstar Andy Lau with blond hair. Which I don't, with him being all kinds of hot Chinese.)
But, for the record, out of the more than 2,147 pictures on the wall, actors/models Djimon Honsou, Eamonn Walker, Mr. Echo from "Lost" (who's name I always misspell), Isaiah Washington, Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Jamie Foxx, Dennis Haysbert, Dave Chappelle, Blair Underwood, Derek Luke, Richard T. Jones, Mihki Pfiefer, Bill Bellamy, Omar Epps, Harold Pierannu, one monikered actor/musician Leon of whom there are NEVER enough pictures of, Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Dule Hill, Idris Elba, Wesley Snipes, Samuel L. Jackson, Tyrese Gibson, Tyson Beckford, Nick Cannon (he actually took a few good pictures), Tiki Barber and Rockmond Dunbar all have multiple pictures on the wall. So do a lot of brown, light skinned, Asian, Latino and white actors. But since it is more than 2,000 pictures, yes, if you just glance at the tiny dots and the dark people are dispersed alphabetically among them, yes, they out number them. But I'd also argue the dark skin men out number the Asians.
And Asian men are hot too.
If we're talking women I have my shrine to the most gorgeous black woman on television, Jill Marie Jones, the baddest black model to ever live, Naomi Campbell, as well as Alex Wek, Iman, N'Bushe Wright, Kellita Smith, Angela Bassett, Serena Williams, Theresa Randall, Yaya DaCosta, Zoe Saldana, another shrine to Meagan Good, Noemie Harris, a classic pic of Melba Moore, Nia Long, Robin Givens, Michelle Obama, Carla Campbell, Merrin Dungey, Stacey Dash, Sophie Okendo, Venus Williams, Emanuela de Paula, Megalyn Echikunwoke, models I like but don't know the names of and Gabbrielle Union.
The wall is a reflection of all kinds of beauty. It is not supposed to be political. If you wanted to, you could go through all 2,147 names and pictures and segregate the people and put them in their respective categories and deem what ever psychology exists behind that. Naomi Campbell (who is on there a ton of times) isn't better or worse than the lighter Vernoica Webb or Noemie Lenoir (who are also on there a ton of times.) And I love how Isaiah Washington looks as much as I love Korean American actor/model Daniel Henney looks, but the Koreans produced waaa-aay more hot pictures of Henney because they have their own media/beauty industry pumping out photos of their respective hotties.
When I say I find all sorts of men attractive I mean it. And the wall reflects that. I mean, John Leguizamo is on it! And Nate Parker! And Jimmy Smits and poor Jimmy Smits has a lot fewer pictures than Isaiah.
But you know who has a lot of pictures on there? Black and brown people. The wall is dominated by black, brown, biracial and multiracial people, every kind of Latino and Asians. So, if anyone has a gripe, it's Matt Damon because I think he's pretty hot, but I'm almost positive I only have four pictures of him, compared to Denzel, who has 13. So there is ONE active bit of politicization that does exist on the wall. I put up fewer pictures of the white actors I love because the beauty industry produces an over abundance of lovely images of them. AND I knew people would complain. I just didn't anticipate people selectively going over all the other brown people with a reverse paper bag test. So yeah. If anyone on the wall has beef, it's the white men and women. Except for Angelina Jolie, who I am highly partial too. But then she's a crazy brunette and I've already admitted a bias to the dark-haired peoples of the world.
Taye Diggs probably also would have a complaint because he's non-existent on the wall, but I can't STAND Taye Diggs. So ... no.
But seriously. You're not supposed to think that hard about the wall. I prefer not to think about the wall that hard, because every time someone asks this question it feels sooo much like everyday of my formative years where I was accused of not being black enough because I didn't speak slang and was a nerd. I assure you. I can find Leo DiCaprio hot and still be down for the cause. The two are not mutually exclusive.
And the only reason why I don't go into creepy depth with my fascination with the beauty of Isaiah Washington is that because the one time I featured him on the blog a year ago I incurred the wrath of people still mad at him for the whole "Chokegate/gay slur" fiasco on Grey's Anatomy.
But I've had issues with this particular litmus test all my life as I've watched black people portray some of the most confusing (but understandably confused) behavior over this issue. We are all a little warped in the head about it. That's why it's fascinating. Like the whole whether light-skinned men are "in or out" debate which I think is the stupidest thing in the world and I refuse to engage in. Or why is it that you can't find a dark skinned male anchor on major network television and TV news? I'm working with what I'm given. Malik Yoba wasn't covering the Obama campaign on BET and TVOne. Hill Harper was. But do I have to pretend like Hill Harper is unattractive because skin color is a such a sore issues?
What are the rules here?
Anyway, this has become a rant, because, as I said, it is a sore spot for me, because I feel like some people just get offended by there being non-black people on the wall and my name being "The Black Snob" and can't reconcile why I would create something that would feature something other than just black people or specifically, one kind of black people.
Anyway. That answer was for anyone who wanted to know. As always, if you have a suggestion of gentleman or woman who you think should go up on the wall who is NOT Taye Diggs (because he is forever and ever banned) and you have high quality, beautiful pictures of them (because I want my black, brown, tan, Asian and Latinos to look just as gorgeous as their white counterparts who all got their pictures taken by Giselle Bensimon in Vogue and Vanity Fair on sunswept beaches looking like Breck girls), PLEASE point me in that direction.
And if you'd like to add to the 28 medium brown to dark brown men on the wall with pictures I don't have, send those too.
Send links, emails and suggestions here.
I apologize if I came off as snarky or testy, but seriously. It's a sore spot for me. I do like discussing color issues because they fascinate me, but I'm not infatuated by any particular color.

advertising on Black media.
There is no question that Blacks buy things just as every group in America does. But if you were to look at most of the media coverage you might believe that African Americans are laden down with debt and/or depend on the Government for survival. Such a perception is both ignorant and false. And advertisers know it.
Recent projections place the African-American buying power at about $845 billion annually, growing to $1.1 trillion by 2012. That means the buying power of Blacks equals the money spent by the Government this year to save the entire financial and mortgage industries. This amount dwarfs the money being debated and requested by the auto industry. And this is more than double the money that is to be spent by the Government for the 2nd stimulus plan in 2009.
Targeted advertising cost up to 73% more for African Americans than any other group. That’s because the top 17% of affluent African Americans contribute 45% to all the buying power in any 1 year. And Pew research reports have shown that up to 2/3 prefer to emphasis their ethnic identity.
All of that money is part of the reason of the success of Black filmmakers, like Spike Lee and Tyler Perry. It is also part of the support to BET, and various television shows that star prominently African American actors/actresses. And it is one of the reasons why advertisers are including and/or directly marketing to Blacks. McDonald’s was one of the first to do this, but today hundreds of companies are doing so.
And the blogosphere is quickly becoming one of the major focal points of advertisers. Because the buying power of African Americans has grown 166% since 1990, the ability of blogs focused on or attracting African Americans to retain a steady daily influx of viewers is important. The internet allows visitors to connect with their favorite sites several times in a day as new posts are added to the blogs throughout the day; as I have seen in my own blogs as an example.
Political blogs were a huge resource in the Presidential election, and I can personally attest to TV One’s interest as VASS was selected as one of 2 blogs to provide daily coverage of the entire election cycle for their online visitors. Similar is true of all blogs, and especially those targeting African Americans.
Add to this the fact that the Black population tends to be younger and female (though my readers are about 50/50 for gender, age 12 - 49 predominantly, college or better educated, middle class incomes or better, and generally single); which advertisers are obsessive in their efforts to gain attention with. Not to mention that home ownership for African Americans is up 32% since 1990, and that the buying power of African Americans in just 3 states (New York, Texas, and Georgia) equals the money spent by the Government on AIG for fear of a complete collapse of the economy.
Black teens spend more money on clothing, video games, PC software and footwear than the average of the entire nation. In fact it could be argued that without Black teens athletic shoes, cell phones, DVD’s, and fast food industries might all lose their profits. And that says nothing of the fact that magazines like GQ, Entrepreneur, Inc. and others rely on the more than 25% readership that comes from African Americans.
Advertisers have increased spending in Black media by 72%, some 791 million dollars in 2006 alone. The automotive (GM leads), communications, cosmetics (L’O’real SA leads) industries and others (Dell, Procter Gamble, Time Warner Inc., PepsiCo) lead in trying to gain Black consumer attention.
I say all this because I realize that for every news media image and story that denigrates or diminishes African Americans, the fact remains that this nation cannot survive without us. Just as was true during the time of Slavery, African Americans are the unsung backbone of the nation. Our buying power is so great that its loss would lead to financial ruin for the entire nation, in a manner that matches and/or exceeds every aspect of the current mortgage/credit crisis.

I was talkin to one of my boys over the weekend. He had been helping one of his boys solve some relationship drama over the last week or so and came to an epiphany about the power struggle between men and women in the context of dating. By the end of our discussion, I had a fresh blog topic for the readers of singleblackmale.net.
Men know when its time to end a relationship more quickly than women, but its a helluva lot more difficult for a man to get out of a relationship than it is for a woman.
Sounds controversial doesnt it? I was hoping so. When he first started explaining his theory, I was hesitant to cosign. Being that I have a lot of female friends, Ive played counselor and consultant to quite a few women who have been trying to leave a guy but just cant. In my mind, there was no way in hell that I thought it was more difficult for a man to bounce when hes unhappy, especially cuz a lot of my brethren just have that emotional/mental switch that allows them to shut down on demand. Everybody knows a cold-hearted bastard. Ive been that guy beforewith good reason of course.
His point started to make sense as he continued to elaborate. I thought of how many times I had been complaining to one of my boys or vice versa about wifeykins and how I/he had had enough of her bullsh*t. One of us was determined to break up with the person cuz things sucked. We get off the phone confident that well put the kabosh on the relationshipthen 2 days later we call our homeboy back:
Friend: Yo, whats good man?
Slim: Not a thang. Whats up?
Friend: So yeah, about shorty..
Slim: Uh oh, what happened?
Friend: Well, I told her things were a wrap
Slim: Good, but you sound hesitant.
Friend: Yeah, I told her over the phone but she said she wanted to talk about it face to face.
Slim: Oh no. Please tell me you didnt!?
Friend: Yeah man, the sex was reckless. Were still together.
Slim: Damn you! Damnnnn yooouuuu! Cant you just keep your d*ck in your pants for the one day that it matters?!
Friend: I know. Shut up dog. This was you 6 months ago. You were still with shorty til like 2 months ago.
Slim: Oh yeah, youre right. Ummsoooo.
The evil but oh so good vajayjay strikes again.

You dont need a car to spend one day in beautiful Bologna when you are staying in Milan: with the new high speed train Bologna is just one hour away from the center of Milan. Most trains leave from the Milano Centrale station, a few from Milano Porta Garibaldi, and stop at Milano Rogoredo, the door station in the south of Milan. You can get to the Milano Rogodero station with the line 3 of the (underground), or with one of the suburban train lines S1, S2, S6 and S10, connecting every point in the city. Has your son or daughter’s school ever called and left a message regarding a school safety issue?
Recently, a friend of mine called me about a message left by her children’s school regarding a school incident. The “incident” involved a bomb threat found in the bathroom. As a parent, my friend wanted to know, “Should I take my kids out of school? How could this happen at a ‘good’ school? Is it normal for schools to simply leave a message?”
First, let me start with the last question. When school safety is threatened, communication is of the utmost importance. Schools want to disseminate information before parents see it on the news. So, “Yes,” it is normal for schools to use an auto-dialer to call parents to relay factual information. Sometimes, schools may use an email blast, in addition to the Parent Link phone dialing system. Subsequently, it is important to maintain up to date contact information with the school.
Second, I don’t think the kid(s) should be taken out of school. Unfortunately, no place carries a guarantee of safety. And, with incidents like Columbine, and more recently, the Virginia Tech shootings, safety precautions are paramount. Moreover, schools are relatively safe. Again, it is important for parents, teachers, and administrators to stay in communication regarding school safety issues.
And last, school safety issues do not discriminate based on location, income levels, nor race. No school is vaccinated from school safety problems. Schools aim to provide students with a safe, secure learning environment. Many schools have the following precautions set in place: all visitors must sign in, ID badges must be visible, and there are city police officers on campus (commonly referred to as Resource Officers), in addition to security personnel at some campuses. All schools should have some type of crisis/prevention management plan set in place – just in case.
If you have questions regarding school safety in your area, contact your local school and familiarize yourself with their plan of action.

I take two buses to get to my job. The buses meet up at a mall - a deadly bus stop for a shopaholic to have, for sure! This morning, my first bus pulled in to the depot 10 minutes early, leaving me with a solid 20 minutes to wait for the next one. I innocently realized that, being Black Friday, Starbucks in the mall was probably open early. Upon entering the mall, however, the atmosphere got the better of me (and my wallet).
Chick-fil-A handed me free coffee as soon as I stepped inside, and I crumbled like the addict I am: I have to buy something!
In 45 minutes - I succumbed to pressure and took a later bus - I bought:
* New pink and gray Adidas sneakers, bamboo socks, and aloe vera socks from Lady Footlocker to aid in my recent running hobby.
* Underwear and yoga-style pants from American Eagle.
* Nothing at Journeys, HM, or Borders, but I still managed to browse all three.
And then I had to sprint to catch the bus, but its okay because I had new running shoes on.
I am in a good mood now, despite having to work. Between the free caffeine, the adrenaline rush of speed shopping, and the fact that it is Friday, Ive got energy and happiness on my side. Plus theres the anticipation of stopping after work to check for late-in-the-day sales.
