Building solar panels can be a fun and interesting project. However, its important to understand what you are dealing with. The homemade built solar panels should be used for smaller applications such as providing light for a shed, powering small electronics and so forth. If you are wanting to build high wattage/large current solar panels in an attempt to provide electricity to your home or a bigger project, this is not recommended. Here is why:
First, homemade solar panels dont last as long and you will see the efficiency decrease in a shorter period of time. Manufactured solar panels usually come with a 25 year warranty and last considerably longer than homemade panels (25+ years).
Homemade solar panels do not have the proper certifications to qualify for the state and federal tax rebates. Without these certifications, you wouldnt be compliant with the building/electrical code or insurance companies. It would take thousands of dollars and several months to get your panels listed by a NRTL(Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories).
It could be a fire hazard. You should never put high powered, homemade panels consisting of wood and/or plastic over your home or flammable material. You would want to mount them on bare ground, a concrete surface, etc.
An alternative for off grid or other solar projects is getting blemished solar panels. These type of panels have small blemishes that dont really affect the output of the panels. You can get these type of panels for $2.50/w up to $4/w including a 25 year warranty. These types of panels are not UL listed. The prices of commercial, UL listed solar panels are currently going for $4-5 per watt.
Here is an entry on the sun electric website regarding this matter:
The Problem of Do It Yourself Panels. Building your own solar module can be fun and exciting. However if you want to power your building on solar power it is best to purchase manufactured panels. The cost of the materials, time, and labor will cost you more than if you buy a panel that is already guaranteed to produce over 40 years of use with a 25 year warranty. With a manufactured panel you know exactly what youll get and you will know that the panel is functioning correctly. In the end youll pay more and get less power and life.
A solar thermal (heating) DIY would be worth looking into if your itching for a solar solution. Solar thermal produces cost effective hot water and reduces the need for gas or electricity to heat water. Its cheaper to build a solar thermal system, and usually an easier task. Also, the payback time for solar thermal is quicker than solar electric systems.

When the campers got back to camp, they found a bed, with lots of pillows. Sanjaya had hopes that it was his reward for winning the challenge, but it was the leader’s bed instead. So camp leader this week, Lou Diamond Phillips gets to sleep in a comfy bed all week.
Angela is having problems with being afraid of the jungle, even with her best friend, Francis with her. She told Francis that her snoring was actually a sound she understood, so it was comforting. Poor thing!
Then the Christian discussions began in the camp. Stephen is very open about his faith and he started having lots of talks with Speidi about it. I think Stephen is totally sincere, but nothing about Spencer strikes me a sincere, except his selfishness. His pretense of “faith” is actually rather offensive
The teams were told to select a woman and a man to compete in the food challenge. Spencer and Heidi wrangled themselves into doing it. They had to compete in the Lost Chamber. Each of them would have 3 minutes to go into a completely dark room with bugs, rats, bats, shark tanks, spiders, snakes and dripping slime and feel their way around to find the most stars.
Neither of them put in a very impressive performance, but Spencer won with two stars, while Heidi only got one. That meant that the mean would get a fish dinner that night and the women would just get rice beans. Poor campers, leaving their fates in the hands of such losers
Stephen took Spencer to the water and “baptized” him. I respect Stephen for that, but wanted to scream at Spencer for the whole thingwhat a complete jerk! Hey, it’s just my opinion, folks.
Most of the campers felt the same way I do, and didn’t even go down to watch the fiasco. Janice said that she didn’t know she signed up for I’m a Holy Roller, Get Me Out of Here LOL!
Then, predictably, Speidi announced that they were quitting the competition again. They claimed that because they are both “super celebrities” (the quotes show how ridiculous that claim is) they were too good to be a part of the show any more. Then Spencer told everyone that he is “too rich and too famous” to stay and they got into a big car and left.

What is swine flu?

Like people, pigs can get influenza (flu), but swine flu viruses aren't the same as human flu viruses. Swine flu doesn't often infect people, and the rare human cases that have occurred in the past have mainly affected people who had direct contact with pigs. But the current swine flu outbreak is different. It's caused by a new swine flu virus that has spread from person to person -- and it's happening among people who haven't had any contact with pigs.

What are swine flu symptoms?

Symptoms of swine flu are like regular flu symptoms and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. Those symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions, and that means that you and your doctor can't know, just based on your symptoms, if you've got swine flu. It takes a lab test to tell whether it's swine flu or some other condition.

If I think I have swine flu, what should I do? When should I see my doctor?

If you have flu symptoms, stay home, and when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Afterward, throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. That will help prevent your flu from spreading.

If you've got flu symptoms, and you've recently been to a high-risk area like Mexico, CDC officials recommend that you see your doctor. If you have flu symptoms but you haven't been in a high-risk area, you can still see a doctor -- that's your call.

Keep in mind that your doctor will not be able to determine whether you have swine flu, but he or she would take a sample from you and send it to a state health department lab for testing to see if it's swine flu. If your doctor suspects swine flu, he or she would be able to write you a prescription for Tamiflu or Relenza. Those drugs may not be required; U.S. swine flu patients have made a full recovery without it.

How does swine flu spread? Is it airborne?

The new swine flu virus apparently spreads just like regular flu. You could pick up germs directly from an infected person, or by touching an object they recently touched, and then touching your eyes, mouth, or nose, delivering their germs for your own infection. That's why you should make washing your hands a habit, even when you're not ill. Infected people can start spreading flu germs up to a day before symptoms start, and for up to seven days after getting sick, according to the CDC.

The swine flu virus can become airborne if you cough or sneeze without covering your nose and mouth, sending germs into the air.

The U.S. residents infected with swine flu virus had no direct contact with pigs. The CDC says it's likely that the infections represent widely separated cycles of human-to-human infections.

How is swine flu treated?

The new swine flu virus is sensitive to the antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza. The CDC recommends those drugs to prevent or treat swine flu; the drugs are most effective when taken within 48 hours of the start of flu symptoms. But not everyone needs those drugs; many of the first people in the U.S. with lab-confirmed swine flu recovered without treatment. The Department of Homeland Security has released 25% of its stockpile of Tamiflu and Relenza to states. Health officials have asked people not to hoard Tamiflu or Relenza.

Is there a vaccine against the new swine flu virus?

No. But the CDC and the World Health Organization are already taking the first steps toward making such a vaccine. That's a lengthy process -- it takes months.

I had a flu vaccine this season. Am I protected against swine flu?

No . This season's flu vaccine wasn't made with the new swine flu virus in mind; no one saw this virus coming ahead of time.

If you were vaccinated against flu last fall or winter, that vaccination will go a long way toward protecting you against certain human flu virus strains. But the new swine flu virus is a whole other problem.

How can I prevent swine flu infection?

The CDC recommends taking these steps:

* Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
* Avoid close contact with sick people.
* Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Can I still eat pork?

Yes. You can't get swine flu by eating pork, bacon, or other foods that come from pigs.

What else should I be doing?

Keep informed of what's going on in your community. Your state and local health departments may have important information if swine flu develops in your area. For instance, parents might want to consider what they would do if their child's school temporarily closed because of flu. That happened in New York City, where St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens closed for a couple of days after eight students were found to have swine flu. Don't panic, but a little planning wouldn't hurt.

How severe is swine flu?

The severity of cases in the current swine flu outbreak has varied widely. In Mexico, there have been deaths and other severe cases. Early cases in the U.S. have been mild. But that could change. The virus itself could change, either becoming more or less dangerous. Scientists are watching closely to see which way the new swine flu virus is heading -- but health experts warn that flu viruses are notoriously hard to predict, as far as how and when they'll change.

Why has the swine flu infection been deadlier in Mexico than in the U.S.?

It is unclear why U.S. cases have been milder compared to those in Mexico. Among the first 20 reported cases in the U.S., only one patient required hospitalization and that person has fully recovered. CDC researchers are actively investigating to learn more about the differences between the cases in Mexico and those in the U.S.

Have there been previous swine flu oubtreaks?

Yes. There was a swine flu outbreak at Fort Dix, N.J., in 1976 among military recruits. It lasted about a month and then went away as mysteriously as it appeared. As many as 240 people were infected; one died.

The swine flu that spread at Fort Dix was the H1N1 strain. That's the same flu strain that caused the disastrous flu pandemic of 1918-1919, resulting in tens of millions of deaths.

Concern that a new H1N1 pandemic might return in winter 1976 led to a crash program to create a vaccine and vaccinate all Americans against swine flu. That vaccine program ran into all kinds of problems -- not the least of which was public perception that the vaccine caused excessive rates of dangerous reactions. After more than 40 million people were vaccinated, the effort was abandoned.

As it turned out, there was no swine flu epidemic.

I was vaccinated against the 1976 swine flu virus. Am I still protected?

Probably not . The new swine flu virus is different from the 1976 virus. And it's not clear whether a vaccine given more than 30 years ago would still be effective.

How many people have swine flu?

That's a hard question to answer, because the figure is changing so quickly. If you want to keep track of U.S. cases that have been confirmed by lab tests and reported to the CDC, check the CDC's web site. If you're looking for cases in other countries, visit the World Health Organization's web site. And when you hear about large numbers of people who are ill, remember that lab tests may not yet have been done to confirm that they have swine flu. And there may be a little lag time before confirmed cases make it into the official tally.

How serious is the public health threat of a swine flu epidemic?

The U.S. government has declared swine flu to be a public health emergency.

It remains to be seen how severe swine flu will be in the U.S. and elsewhere, but countries worldwide are monitoring the situation closely and preparing for the possibility of a pandemic.

The World Health Organization has not declared swine flu to be a pandemic. The WHOwants to learn more about the virus first and see how severe it is and how deeply it takes root.

But it takes more than a new virus spreading among humans to make a pandemic. The virus has to be able to spread efficiently from one person to another, and transmission has to be sustained over time. In addition, the virus has to spread geographically.

Ready to break out those flared polyester pants and wide-collared silk shirts? Seven American Idol hopefuls will geared to get their Disco Duck on Tuesday when the reality television singing show is reunited with the shows fourth visitation (Disco,’70s Dance Theme and Bee Gees weeks during the third, fourth and sixth seasons, respectively) of the genre Tuesday.
Some may cringe at a prospect of the reflective ball-themed event, awaiting an ensuing train wreck that will eclipse Apr. 14 Cinema Week. But fear not. With an era chocked full of songs to choose from, the result promises to be smooth like Peaches (and Herb).
Guessing what Idol crooners will choose is consistently an act of futility for this writer. Instead are some suggestions and insights.
The night is a critical one for perennial bubble kids Matt Giraud, Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai. After stumbling through a retry at Bryan Adams tune Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman, Giraud literally escaped with his contest life thanks to the producers need to infuse some sensationalism. (This is TV; hence, ratings rule!) Rounds needs to regain confidence and luster after recent dud deliveries and excessive bickering with Idol judges. Desai needs to regain the crowd-pleasing vibe he had when uncorking Bobby Browns My Prerogative to keep voters from snoozing from a steady diet of macdad-a-croon.
MATT GIRAUD
Song selection is key for Michigans piano man. Girauds light and nifty falsetto-ed voice needs the right fit as does the integration of keyboarding. And how to trim and splice a genre predicated on extended mix music? KC and the Sunshine Band peppy tonk Get Down Tonight might help his upper-range vocals and ivory skills get some Tuesday boogie. With a bushel-full of editing magic, Foxys Get Off could be a funky, manic elixir.
LIL ROUNDS
Desperate times often require desperate measures. Rounds needs to rebound – in a big way. Breathy, bombastic 1978 Chaka Khan (with band Rufus) hit Im Every Woman would be a great springboard for Rounds to re-assert herself as a force to be reckoned with. Rounds could also register an epic blast with 1976 Vicki Sue Robinson shot, Turn the Beat Around.
Although a few pundits have suggested Gloria Gaynors I Will Survive the song would send a message of Rounds sheer will to Judge Dredd (lead panelist Simon Cowell, who has unmercifully ridden Rounds for a month) this writer urges the Memphis mom of three to avoid it. Season Six top-three finisher Melinda Doolittle once said she correlated song lyrics and audience perception. Doolittle skipped the second phrase how can a loser ever win? of Bee Gees classic Broken Heart. To that point, Rounds would be prematurely conceding defeat to choose Donna Summers Last Dance whether it ends up that way or not.
ANOOP DESAI
Nothing says cool like Noop or Kool and the Gang. Crowd-pleasers such as Ladies Night and Get Down on It may come off cheesy or remind fans of the Doggs propensity for partying. A two-speed version of Abbas Dancing Queen (a slow, laboring into verse followed by a high-gear audience-grabbing finish) could show rich vocal tone and range while whipping studio participants into a momentary frenzy.
DANNY GOKEY
After last weeks heavy-hearted arrangement of Endless Love, its time for Gokey to lighten up. Stomp! by the The Brothers Johnson or The Trammps Disco Inferno allow the Goke-meister to show his fun side and growling mid-range chops. Even at risk of causing Taylor Hicks fancy-footed flashbacks, go ahead and crank up the Hokey Gokey.
If Danny-boy stayed with the gentler stuff, one couldnt fault him for choosing The Love I Lost by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. The second verse carries meaningful lyrics for a fellow in his situation while the deep baritone in his voice would fit perfectly.
ALLISON IRAHETA
The stocky red-haired rocker could harness some sass and brass with Donna Summers Bad Girls, Blondies Call Me or a more hip, sultry Diana Ross Upside Down. Any of the tunes would take a maturity 16-year-old to pull them off. Iraheta has the goods to do it.
KRIS ALLEN
Baby faced Allen should focus on discos softer side with Boz Scaggs JoJo or an Allen retrofit on Leo Sayers cool bop You Make Me Feel Like Dancing. December, 1963 (Oh What a Night) by The Four Seasons could also be a smooth, foot-shuffling change thatd allow Allen to infuse instrumental talent. Feelgood jaunts like the Seasons lick are becoming part of the Little Rock, Ark. natives show identity.
ADAM LAMBERT
Of the remaining artists, legions of viewers will sit screen side with baited breath to see what master showman Lambert will do. An astute song choice could harness the wildly creative, theatrical side of Lambert and mad vocal horsepower that has fans, pundits and bookies alike peg as the Season Eight runaway front runner.
Maybe more than other musical categories, Disco carries a sexual tension for Lambert that is precarious to traverse. Due to the former stage actors extreme skill and the shows knack for offering a highly homogenized music product, rumblings of Lamberts same-gender fondness have effectively been dissipated. But related innuendos created by a litany of tunes or groups (Diana Rosss Im Coming Out, Gloria Gaynors More than a Woman,  The Weather Girls Its Raining Men, Another One Bites The Dust by Queen or Y.M.C.A. by The Village People sit at the forefront) would give show spinsters fits and risk fan vote retention.
This writer respects Lamberts personal preference, regardless of gender, as much as viewing the work he brings to the American Idol stage weekly. Therefore, if the 27-year-old Los Angeles resident passed on provocative tunes or groups, perhaps The Trammps Disco Inferno, Shannons Let the Music Play or Anita Wards Ring My Bell could employ Lamberts trademark revving, wailing upper-register and stage artistry.
A few other disco hits just begging to be sung:
Alicia Bridges I Love the Night Life (Disco Round),
Ami Stewarts Knock on Wood,
Donna Summers Hot Stuff,
Rose Royces Car Wash,
Earth, Wind and Fires September and
LTDs Back In Love Again.
So are you ready to Rock Freak on Disco Night? Get ready, it promises to be Geeeeee Quuuuuuue.

It’s inevitable that people accumulate more and more things in the home throughout the years, but might not take notice until the garage is full and the closets are bulging with items. Organizing and cleaning the home can be an overwhelming task overall, but there are ways to organize and clean to make it easier on the homeowner.

If organizing the garage is a task you need to tackle, first sort the items by what you need and don’t need. Then, organize into categories such as tools, appliances and clothing. Put what you keep in storage bins and clearly mark them so they are easy to find in the future. Do not drain any type of chemical or paint found in the garage, since these need to be disposed of properly. Contact your local toxic waste disposal service to find out where and how you can dispose of these items.

The refrigerator and pantry are also places that tend to be overfilled. Go through both, and throw away anything that has expired. Canned goods that you will not use, but have not expired, are the perfect items to donate to charity.

My front porch is overwhelmed with the scent of freesia and jasmine flowers right now. Of course, since I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I'm pretty lucky to always have something in bloom here. When I lived in the Midwest, I remember the thrill of seeing the first crocuses peek through the melting snow. In this photo, daffodils are dappling the US capitol with brilliant Spring colors. Are Spring flowers peeking through the soil at your home? Have you planted any annuals? Did you plant any bulbs that are now blooming? Tell me about your home's flower power.

During these tough economic times, its likely that many people are finding themselves short on rent money. If you are in this situation, remember not to panic. If you handle yourself professionally and follow some key guidelines, you can convince your landlord to defer your payment due date:

1. Open communication: Avoiding your landlord is the last thing you want to do if youre short on cash. Even though you might feel embarassed or scared, you risk generating ill feelings and making the situation worse.

2. Do not bounce checks: Absolutely do not submit a check if you know it is going to bounce. Youll end up owing even more money than before and this will not buy you any additional time. Youll also end up paying the bank fee for a returned check, and your landlord can legally charage you for any late fees that might apply.

3. Ask for an extension: Explain your unique situation to your landlord. Be reasonable when asking for an extension. Realize that the landlord has to make payments too, so a two-week extension may not be plausible. If possible, offer to pay a portion of the rent; this may buy you a longer extension.

4. Play the good tenant card: If youve never been late with your rent before, use that to your advantage. Your landlord doesnt want to lose you as a tenant. Its actually less costly to accept a late payement than it would be to find a new tenant.

5. Put it in writing: If your landlord does extend your rents due date, put it in writing. This is a way to protect yourself if the landlord reneges on the deal.

There's something scrappy in Hollywood's water -- mere days after the very unexpected Faye Dunaway/Hilary Duff feud was ignited, another old guard/new guard battle is blazing. This time around Etta James is kicking it old school -- and threatening to kick Beyonce's teeth in.

Now, I was under the impression that these ladies got on like gangbusters -- not only did Beyonce play Etta in 2008's "Cadillac Records," but Etta acted as a mentor to B and attended the December premiere. Well, that's all in the past because Etta is furious that Beyonce dared to sing her iconic "At Last" during the presidential inauguration.

While Beyonce has been going on for months about how Etta James is one of her idols, it appears the object of her affection has been wanting to kick her butt!

The 71-year-old singer seemingly had her feathers ruffled when she heard that Beyonce sang her eternal hit, At Last, at Barack Obamas Inauguration Ball.

Said Etta at a concert in Seattle last week, Your President, the one with the big ears he had that woman singing my song. She gone get her ass whipped. She added: The great Beyonce I cant stand Beyonce.

"I can't stand Beyonce! She's going to get her ass whooped," Etta screamed (via) at an event celebrating her career. The chanteuse went on to slam Barack Obama for selecting Ms. Knowles to do the honors. "You know your president, the one with the big ears -- he ain't my president -- he had that woman singing for him at his Inauguration. How dare Beyonce sing my song that I been singing forever!"

I can't decide why this bothers Etta so much now -- Beyonce had previously sang the song at Fashion Rocks, for AOL Live Sessions and in "Cadillac Records." Guess this was just one time too many.
Beyonce and her camp took the high road by not responding was reached for comment.

This, of course, begs the question: Team Etta or Team Beyonce.

Athletes Charities and Events Worth Supporting
First and foremost, there are several “it goes without saying” celebrity athletes who, in my book, can do no wrong. Dikembe Mutombo walks on water, period. Dude can shake his finger at me and ask me to move to the Congo to clean-up bedpans at his hospital and I’d do it. He is a humanitarian first, an athlete second. Safe to say he reigns supreme in the Church of Athlebritology. Yeah, Melo’s permitted through the pearly gates but I’m gonna need a few hours with him in purgatory first just to make sure…Gilbert Arenas, Dwight Howard, Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Paul-all gain immediate entry…as do Grant Hill, Etan Thomas, Juwan Howard, and Tony Hawk. Quite a few won’t make it into Athlebritology heaven: Lebron James, Michael Vick, Kobe Bryant and Roger Clemens just to name a few.
Over time, it’s become increasingly easier to determine who’s really into helping others and who’s in it just for the PR (a-hem Lebron). As I add events to the calendar page, I’ll be sure to highlight the ones I personally recommend. You can take my advice or not…for example, if you live in So-Cal and have never attended the Cancer for College event with Will Ferrell then you must be insane. Ferrell lends his name, time and comedy to this incredibly necessary and sincere charity event. For a small price you help send a cancer patient to college, hang out with Frank the Tank, play golf, eat good food and make new friends…another event I wouldn’t miss is Celebrity Fight Night held in Arizona. It’ll cost ya a bit more to attend the premier fundraiser for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, but you get one hell of a swag-bag and a truly priceless experience…
Granted, I can’t list ‘em all in one post…but I will keep you updated on what some of our mighty might fine men are doing…which all goes back to their foundations and how they are run. I want to help raise money and awareness for foundations with employees who care about their work. Don’t wait three days to call me back if I got a fat check for you-because to me this means you must not really need it or care as much as you’d like us to believe. Anyway…several cool new foundations and website have come to my attention in the last few weeks. One comes from hockey great Jeremy Roenick.

Many people would like to invest in bank foreclosures and look for basic information about foreclosure real estate. To get accurate and reliable data, they resort to a listing service, because online foreclosure listings are a very convenient way to keep informed. They provide extensive details about foreclosure homes available, concerning both the foreclosure properties as such and how to contact the owner. The interest in foreclosure real estate is very high, because foreclosure prices are usually below the real estate market prices. Homeowners who have secured a bank loan with their property and have failed to make several payments will have their home taken by the bank and included among other bank foreclosures.

The main benefit of buying foreclosure real estate is that foreclosure homes usually come with a great price.
