"When Nick Garcia woke up Tuesday morning, he thought it would be like any other day. Yet just a few hours later, he was in the airport, waiting to head to Toronto to take up with old teammate Mo Johnston.

He looked down forlornly at his saxophone case. It was his only friend now, the only one he could trust. Rain pelted at the airport windows, thrashing down from the grey skies. As Garcia looked out at the planes shuffling out onto the slick runway, he thought about the dark night that had lead to this chain of events. It wasn't pretty.

He thought about the woman he loved, and the child he'd leave behind. He thought about all the other women, the ones he hadn't treated right, and wondered how they would feel if they knew about his regret.

It was all up for grabs now, like a through ball to Michael Thomas. In his right hand he clutched the fishing reel of fate. He know it was what Mo Johnston wanted. And he knew he wouldn't give it up, even if it meant death. He knew his wife would want him to die that way, fishing reel in hand. But that ending hadn't been written yet, and he tried desperately to shake it out of his head.

He thought back to happier times. Just last night, in fact, when he had been grilling some pork medallions wrapped in bacon. He liked bacon, and certainly tonight's dinner would be just as good as any he had in recent memory. But then he heard a noise outside, and a knock at the door, and everything changed.

Nick Garcia started and played in every game this year for San Jose, earning two cautions along the way."



Honestly, I can see why they went with the revised version.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Rocket Man bid farewell to the Las Vegas Strip Wednesday after five years and 241 shows at Caesars Palace - but said it won't necessarily be a long, long time before he returns. Wearing a bright red shirt that matched his piano and a coat emblazoned with "Las Vegas Pirates" on its back and "Captain Elton" on its right sleeve, Elton John rolled through his hits and reflected on his time at the Colosseum, a stage he famously shared with Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Cher.

The night before Valentine's Day of 2004, Elton John did something once unthinkable for a rock star of the '70s. He became a Las Vegas headliner.

The durable star had only played Las Vegas in clearly defined one-night concert venues. And he had once said, with good reason, that he wouldn't be playing a casino at age 45.

Back then, a rocker's biggest Vegas fear was irrelevance. And now, as he counts down the last of 242 shows at Caesars Palace, the best guess as to why end it now? Irrelevance.

"We went from what we thought would be 75 shows over three years to 242 shows over five years. That's an amazing run," said Scott Schecter, vice president of entertainment for Harrah's Entertainment. "We should feel great about having pushed the limits for what is probably the reasonable cycle for entertainment in town these days."

Of course, there is no expiration date for Elton John songs. But "The Red Piano" was such a specific showcase for them, and David LaChapelle's videos such strong statements in their own rights, that it's better to think of April 22 as the end of a project -- much like "Billy Elliott," one of two Broadway musicals John launched during the Caesars years -- than the end of John as a Las Vegas performer.



"Tumbleweed Connection" is one of the first albums I remember buying. It came out in 1970, but I was probably a year or two older when I treated my elementary school class to "Burn Down the Mission" as part of a music class report.

My information came solely from one magazine -- maybe Life -- found in the school library. The music teacher had never heard of Elton John, though she did make us sing along to Neil Diamond's "Taproot Manuscript."

By 1975, everyone knew about Elton. He was such a big star at that point, no one thought it premature when he put out a musical autobiography, "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy." I bought it the first week it came out, having mastered the art of getting vinyl albums home intact on a bicycle.

That same year brought the star to Las Vegas for the first time, for a concert at the old Las Vegas Convention Center, at the peak of his amazing early-'70s run. Rock concerts were so foreign to Las Vegas that tickets were sold from a movie theater. Strip headliners that month included Glen Campbell, Eddie Arnold, Mitzi Gaynor and Rich Little.

By 2003, it wasn't so rare to have John show up for annual concert stops at the MGM Grand Garden. But a lot of us old fans had quit caring much.

"The Lion King" -- which, ironically, opens next month at Mandalay Bay and sort of replaces his presence on the Strip -- had detoured the songwriter to a new audience and career opportunities. But the barnstorming piano-rock of the '70s had taken its place in the past.

That is, at least, until his 2001 album "Songs from the West Coast" found the old sound again. Then, "The Red Piano" found its spirit.

"When we made the decision (that John would follow Celine Dion with a Colosseum residency), we didn't really know what was going to be delivered," Schecter said. "Pretty much whatever he did would be fine with us."

But they did have the star's word, as stated at a news conference, that "I want it to be special. I want people to go, 'Elton has made an effort here.' Not just take the money and run.

"I haven't had the chance really to do a specialized show," John added. "At this stage of my life, at 56, it's another string to my bow."

"The Red Piano" unveiled a neon stage design and sexually suggestive inflatables, striking the perfect balance between the singer's Liberace tendencies and the underlying grit of his classic hits. Pop-art photographer LaChapelle's giant-screen videos made songs you'd heard in a thousand supermarkets revelatory, as though you were understanding them for the first time.

"Philadelphia Freedom" explodes with a '70s-hair porn star celebration of the decade's decadence. "Rocket Man" unspools to an impossibly long, surreal look at the star trapped in the cage of backstage life, everyone wanting a piece of him.

A couple of years ago, they slipped in a video for "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" that filled the giant screen with the electrocution of a naked transsexual. It was quite possibly the most transgressive thing ever seen in a show on the Las Vegas Strip.

It was not, by any stretch, "The Lion King."



"I hope Vegas is not taking the brunt end of just how hard that man works," says John Meglen, co-chief executive of AEG Live, which operates the Colosseum.

Two Larry King interviews with John document the shift in enthusiasm between 2005 and last year. "It's a really exciting place to be," John said in the early going. "I never thought I'd say I really enjoyed playing in Vegas and staying there, but I actually do, and they look after me so well."

But in February of last year, he told King, "I'm onstage in Las Vegas for only an hour-and-a-half, and halfway through the show (I start thinking about) parliamentary elections. And it's like I don't know why that happens."

I have a good guess. The rigid, 95-minute formula of "The Red Piano" became too rote and confining for a performer far more generous with his concert stage time elsewhere.

The singer put out two albums of new material during the Caesars era. And if he hadn't put one song from each of them into the show, it's doubtful many in the Caesars audience would have known.

"I look at the struggle Elton is having right now getting people to reconnect with his records," his friend Pete Townshend noted before a Who concert in 2006. "He makes another superb record, and it hardly dents the air. Making a million dollars a night in Vegas will not keep Elton happy -- he is a compulsive and driven songwriter, a richly gifted composer, a hugely prolific and substantial artist and a real performer."

All those things were evident when John added the autobiographical new song "The Bridge" to the Caesars set, singing it alone at the piano in the deep, scarred voice of his recent years. Anyone sorry to see "The Red Piano" go should probably ponder the lyrics:

"And every one of us has to face that day

Do you cross the bridge or do you fade away

And every one of us that ever came to play

Has to cross the bridge or fade away.

In my prior post in this series I commented on Disney most probably expecting us Europeans to be grateful for being allowed to join D23 even so they add a gross surcharge for international delivery. Afterall they never allowed Europeans to orde their (failed) Disney Yearbook. Andy chimed in reminding us that the extreme shipping is also tagged to any other orders international members place in the D23-shop - even if it is a small comparable affordable item such as a pin. I agree with him that this is really annoying. But - differen from him - I expected it. Afterall Disney always used to overcharge for shipping and handling with similar amounts such as 25$ - prior experience with the Disney Catalogue and the mailorder services of Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resort Anaheim taught me that. In addition I never expected to place many orders for D23 exclusive merchandise. So while I think it is annoying it does not irk me as much as it does Andy. However, I think Disney should overthink this policy - even if international mailing results in extra work such as completing the custom forms (but more about that later). Also I think as an international member I also have the option to liump several orders of items together so to reduce the amount of shipping that applies to each separate item. However, I see that that might not work for limited items that sell out before the next item shows up one is interested in.

Face 2 Face tour delights Philips crowd

For generations of fans, their decades of albums rest next to each other in the of their music collections. On Saturday night, Sir Elton John and Billy Joel brought their successful Face 2 Face tour back to Philips Arena downtown. For nearly four hours, they enthusiastically banged through their hit catalogs, deep album cuts and, for good measure, a couple of rockers from the Beatles, a common influence of the singers-songwriters.

In these tough economic times, the piano men made sure the ticket holders more than got their moneys worth.

Thank you for purchasing the tickets and keeping us in work, Joel told the sold-out, screaming crowd. Pointing to the rafters, Joel couldnt resist adding: Those people up there in Decatur, we want to thank you, too, for purchasing those seats. But you probably paid too much!

The evening was expertly paced with John and Joel leading off with trading verses on their iconic ballads Your Song and

Eventually, both men yielded the stage to each other and their bands for extended trips through the John and Joel songbooks.

s nice to be home! John, a Peachtree Road resident, told the roaring crowd before launching into fan favorite album cuts like Funeral For a Friend and Madman Across the Water.

He dedicated Tiny Dancer to his favorite local women, including his Atlanta household domestic goddess Lucy and B98.5 FM morning personality Vikki Locke (Weve met Lucy and if theres a rock star in residence at Johns Buckhead home, its her).

The singer also saluted Atlanta filmmaker Tyler Perry, telling the crowd, m so proud to live in the same city as Tyler Perry. Hes fantastic!

If John is rocks regal statesman these days, Joel may be rocks crazy uncle who trots out jokes well past their expiration date but manages to make you laugh anyway.

A creaky microphone stand served as a running joke for Joel, and he threatened to turn another into a lethal weapon during s Still Rock Roll To Me.

The singer also delighted fans with a live rendition of his epic Scenes From an Italian Restaurant and a jazzy, overlooked cut from his album 52nd Street (the 1978 original featured a memorable guest stint from jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard).

The evening built toward an epic finale featuring both men back behind their pianos with both bands, delivering blistering renditions of The Bitch is Back, You May Be Right, Bennie and the Jets, and a pair of rockers from The White Album: and Back in the USSR.

The evenings biggest kick was watching Joel and John having such a ball trading vocals on each others hit songs (John was even singing along with the crowd during Joels opening verse of You May Be Right. He wasnt alone. Even the black-suited Philips Arena security team loitering in the stairwells were mouthing the words).

The duo closed the evening for fatigued fans with Candle in the Wind and Piano Man.

On the way out of the arena, music fans were left to wonder if the floundering music industry with its current focus on creating cherry-pickable, disposable iTunes singles, is still capable of producing multi-decade artists like John and Joel.

Or as Mississippi-born bluesman Mose Allison, 81, a key Elton John influence, sang earlier this month during a gig at Blind Willies: When I become was, will there still be someone around with essentially my kinda sound?

A question worth posing in an era when the previous sold-out show at Philips Arena this month was Britney Spears, a performer who lip synched her entire two-hour concert.

In response, Bethenny replied, OMG, tell him that hes having a deep-seated homosexual crisis and he should just go with his instinct. What a difference a coast makes.
While Tamra’s gay-oriented comment was fueled by hate and confusion, Bethenny’s response was met with laughter and agreement that could only be followed by a champagne cocktail at Pastis. There has yet to be a backlash against the Northern Californian who describes herself as “the hottest housewife in Orange County,” yet the upcoming Bravo reunion, hosted by perfectly-groomed-Bravo-gay-in-residence Andy Cohen, will hopefully spotlight her blunder. As for Bethenny and her entourage of New York fag hags? As long as “gay boyfriend” remains in their day-to-day lingo, they can do no wrong.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Raising fresh questions about his appointment to Congress, Sen. Roland Burris admitted in a document released Saturday that former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother asked him for campaign fundraising help before the governor named Burris as Illinois' junior senator.The disclosure reflects a major omission from Burris' testimony in January when an Illinois House impeachment committee specifically asked if he had ever spoken to Robert Blagojevich or other aides to the now-deposed governor about the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama. State Rep. Jim Durkin, the impeachment committee's ranking Republican, told The Associated Press that he and House Republican Leader Tom Cross will ask Sunday for an outside investigation into whether Burris perjured himself.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada also said he was reviewing the disclosure, the latest twist for Senate Democrats in Washington who only consented to seat Burris on the condition that there were no "pay to play" promises exchanged in the appointment.Burris said he voluntarily gave the committee a Feb. 4 affidavit disclosing the contact with Robert Blagojevich because "there were several facts that I was not given the opportunity to make during my testimony to the impeachment committee."The affidavit, released by Burris' office after it was first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, said Robert Blagojevich called him three times _ once in October and twice after the November election _ to seek his fundraising assistance.Robert Blagojevich's attorney said his client believes one of the conversations was recorded by the FBI.Burris, a Democrat like the former governor, said he told Robert Blagojevich he would not raise money because it would look like he was trying to win favor from the governor for his appointment. But he said he did ask the governor's brother "what was going on with the selection of a successor" to Obama in the Senate and "he said he had heard my name mentioned in the discussions."It's the second time Burris has changed his story. In an unsolicited affidavit to the impeachment committee on Jan. 6, Burris said he had only one limited conversation with the governor before accepting the Senate appointment.Then, appearing before the committee Jan. 8, he said he told former Blagojevich aide-turned-lobbyist Lon Monk last summer that he was interested in the post.The governor appointed Burris, a former state attorney general, to the Senate seat on Dec. 30, three weeks after federal agents arrested Blagojevich on a complaint alleging he had tried to trade the appointment for campaign cash or a high-paying job. Burris' affidavit says he had called Harris to recommend his nephew for a state job and during the conversation asked about the Senate seat.A spokeswoman for Burris said he would not make himself available for interviews Saturday.Robert Blagojevich's lawyer, Michael Ettinger, said his client contacted Burris in October to ask him to host a fundraiser for his brother because Burris had contributed in the past, but Burris said he didn't want to commit before the election. Ettinger said the subject of the Senate seat wasn't raised.Ettinger said Robert Blagojevich remembers only one other conversation in November from the governor's campaign office, which the FBI had wiretapped at the time. He said his client confirmed Burris' account that he declined the fundraiser because of the potential conflict.But he also told Ettinger no one on his brother's staff had ever mentioned Burris as being interested in the seat.A publicist for the former governor released a statement saying Blagojevich "acted ethically and honestly and believes Sen. Burris did too."In explaining his incomplete testimony, Burris said in the affidavit he recalled mentioning Monk "but was then asked another question and did not mention anyone else."His lawyer, Timothy Wright III, said in a cover letter Burris answered "truthfully and to the best of his recollection," but that the "fluid nature" of the questioning and a review of the transcript showed Burris that he "was unable to fully respond to several matters."Associated Press writers Mike Robinson and Carla K. Its not that unusual as it sounds, but I think a lot of people wouldnt expect that from Dresden. We are not in the middle of Russia, but as well here we have a continental influence of the climate. Therefore the very east of Germany has hotter and dryer summers than anywhere else in the republic and the winters are usually longer and colder.
The last two winters were no winters. We had no minus degrees and there was nearly no snow. So everybody is really happy to have strong winter. Theres so much snow!! Unbelievable that each snow flake has another form!!
Believe me or not but this cold temperatures put people into good humour. Its really an event. And its fun too: Wearing lots of warm socks, funny caps, sliding on the pavement (un)intentionally. There are tons of snow men in the Great Garden and the Elbe meadows. Some people also use them for ski touring. In the tram you hear people talking about the coldness, but in a positive exciting way.
There are absolutely no bad spirits and no way for a winter blues.
And last Sunday I myself throw my first snowball and hit Lolli on the back : ) gotcha.
